Seabird watching takes people to some of the wildest coasts on Earth. Done well, it supports conservation and local communities.
Classic seabird destinations
- British Isles: Bass Rock, the Farne Islands, Skomer and Bempton Cliffs.
- North America: Cape St. Mary's in Newfoundland, Machias Seal Island in Maine, and pelagic trips from Monterey, California.
- New Zealand: the royal albatross colony at Taiaroa Head and albatross boat trips off KaikÅura.
- Southern Ocean: expedition cruises to South Georgia and the Falklands.
Pelagic trips
Many seabirds are rarely seen from land. Organized boat trips offshore, known as pelagics, are the best way to see albatrosses, petrels and storm petrels.
Visiting responsibly
- Stay on marked paths and behind barriers at colonies.
- Choose operators who follow wildlife codes of conduct.
- Never fly drones near colonies without permission.
- Follow biosecurity rules when landing on islands.
