Equipment Recommendations
The right equipment depends on whether you are watching from shore, heading out on a boat or working at a colony.
For watching
- Binoculars: 8x42 or 10x42 are the common choices. Waterproof and fog-proof models are worth it near the sea.
- Spotting scope: essential for sea watching from headlands, where birds pass far offshore.
- Field guide or app: a regional seabird guide, plus apps such as Merlin for identification help.
On a boat
Choose lower magnification binoculars. They are easier to hold steady on a moving deck. Bring waterproof layers, seasickness remedies and a lens cloth. Salt spray gets everywhere.
For photography
A telephoto lens lets you photograph birds without approaching them. A camera with fast autofocus helps with birds in flight.
For research
Research equipment, from GPS loggers to nest cameras, should be chosen for minimal impact on the birds. Tags are kept to a small share of the bird's body weight, and all work with live birds needs the relevant permits.
